Listening In

"The beautiful disturber of air"

Music is always there for you. It teaches you about yourself, it feels your pain, it understands your happiness, and it knows the real you - no physical means necessary. It is a timeless and everlasting place that you can take comfort in, no matter if you prefer Beethoven or Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion?). It is your best and truest friend. Thus, I've chosen to share how music is just as important to me, creatively speaking, as fashion and art is. Let's take a look at what we're listening in to this week in our dimension. No particular order.

Five
"The Warmth" - Incubus, Make Yourself

First things first: if you must know anything about me, it is that I am a die-hard Incubus and Brandon Boyd fan. I'm a 90's child at heart, and although Incubus is more of a "mid-to-late nineties era" band, I still get that nostalgic sense of the classic rock decade that the nineties brought when I listen to Incubus. The first time I ever saw Brandon Boyd was while watching this '99 live Incubus performance.

Four
"Loxstep" - Annuals, Sweet Sister

The annuals are a band that my brother introduced me to a while back. They've got a unique and meaningful, yet easy-going sound. This song always reminds me of my first day of college, nervously driving to class in my '94 Buick as the Sweet Sister album came through my speakers.

Three
"Vampires In Love " - A Great Big Pile of Leaves,
Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?

A couple of good friends and I went to see Say Anything live at Starland Ballroom in 2010. A Great Big Pile of Leaves opened for them, and we were not disappointed. Fast forward two years to AGBPOL's live performance at the local bowling alley, The Asbury Lanes; not only was the show freaking awesome, but we also got to meet and take a picture with the lead singer, Pete! These guys are seriously talented and make some great music... I encourage you to listen.

Two
"Right Outside" - Anthony Green featuring Chino Moreno,
  Beautiful Things

Anthony Green has a very distinct sound/voice, so when teamed up with Deftones frontman Chino Moreno, obviously magical things happen, such as this song. It's got a very dreamy, almost haunting feel and is, for lack of a less understating word, very beautiful. Again, another find with the help from my musically inclined brother.

One

"I Guess I'm Floating" - M83, Before the Dawn Heels Us.

This delicate song proves just how deep and emotion evoking a 2 minute song consisting of basically six notes can be. It is humble in that it does not have any words, fancy instruments or intense breakdowns. It is moving enough as is, and I find it to be an outstanding piece of music. M83 has always been a project of which nothing else quite matches up to, and cannot be necessarily categorized, or compared, for that matter, to other music that is around these days. I'd like to think of M83 as group of brilliant musicians, and I hope you think so too :)

Enjoy this weeks sounds while you're living inspired.
